What Changed After Brexit

Before Brexit, UK citizens could work in Norway freely as EEA members. Since January 1, 2021, the UK is treated as a non-EEA country. UK citizens now need a work permit, just like citizens of the USA, Canada, or Australia.

How to Get a Work Permit

  • Get a job offer from a Norwegian employer
  • The employer registers the position with NAV (Labour and Welfare Administration)
  • Apply for a Skilled Worker residence permit on UDI.no
  • Pay the application fee (NOK 6,300)
  • Book an appointment at VFS Global or the Norwegian Embassy in London
  • Submit biometrics and documents (passport, job contract, qualifications proof)
  • Wait for processing (1–3 months)
  • Receive your residence card and travel to Norway

Requirements

  • Concrete job offer with full-time employment (minimum 80%)
  • Salary must meet Norwegian standards for the occupation
  • The job should require specific qualifications (vocational training or degree)
  • Valid UK passport
  • Clean criminal record (police certificate may be required)

Special Rules for UK Citizens

  • UK citizens who were already living in Norway before January 1, 2021 retain their residence rights
  • The UK-Norway agreement allows for some preferential treatment compared to other non-EEA countries
  • Family reunion is possible once you have your residence permit
